ACUVUE Abiliti 1-Day Soft Therapeutic Lenses for Myopia Management

Abiliti 1-Day lenses are a new option of daily wear, single-use, disposable lenses that have the potential to slow the progression of myopia.

This lenses are intended to be used by children who, at the initiation of treatment, are 7 to 12 years old, with myopia between -0.75D and -4.50D and 1.00D or less astigmatism, with non-diseased eyes and are symptomatic with regard to a need for distance vision correction.

Slowing axial elongation and myopia progression was demonstrated in a clinical study of children between 7 and 12 years of age with a required lens wear time of, at a minimum, 8 hours per day and 5 days per week. Longer-term myopia control effect of the lens as well as permanent myopia control after lens treatment is discontinued has not been established through clinical trials.

“The approval from Health Canada for ACUVUE Abiliti 1-Day lenses marks another major step forward in our collaborative efforts with parents and eye care professionals to reshape the future of myopia,” said Xiao-Yu Song, MD, PhD, Global Head of Research & Development, Johnson & Johnson Vision. “Our researchers and scientists specifically designed Abiliti 1-Day to be a novel soft therapeutic lens with the potential to slow the progression of myopia in children.”

The Health Canada approval for Abiliti 1-Day lenses marks another significant milestone for the Abiliti brand and Johnson & Johnson Vision. The company continues to lead with science and expand the portfolio of products and services for myopia management in children. Abiliti will provide parents and eye care professionals with a robust and comprehensive set of products for myopia management.

Lens Material

The lenses are built from silicone hydrogel (senofilcon A) lens material, the same material as ACUVUE OASYS 1-Day contact lenses, “which have never been beaten in comfort.”

Lens Design

Abiliti 1-Day lenses are not traditional concentric ring presbyopic design lenses. This lenses are a breakthrough innovation specifically designed with novel ring focus technology to slow myopia progression in children. It have been shown to reduce axial elongation by 0.105mm on average over a six-month period.

ACUVUE Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic Lenses

Johnson and Johnson also introduced Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic lenses for Myopia Management. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this lens for myopia management. Johnson & Johnson Vision is collaboratively advancing the next generation of science, research and development with the potential to transform standards of care in myopia. The FDA approval of Abiliti Overnight lenses stems from the collaboration of Johnson & Johnson Vision with Menicon to bring forward therapeutic contact lenses for myopia management under the Abiliti brand.

The Abiliti portfolio is a growing suite of solutions designed to manage myopia. Johnson and Johnson said that their goal is to develop products that give clearer vision today and better eye health in the future.

“The FDA approval of Abiliti™ Overnight lenses marks an important milestone in our commitment to help change the trajectory of eye health,” said Xiao-Yu Song, MD, PhD, Global Head of Research & Development, Johnson & Johnson Vision. “We look forward to supporting patients and eye care professionals with comprehensive resources, starting with Abiliti™ Overnight lenses, and continuing with additional products and services to address myopia management.”

It have been shown that Abiliti Overnight lenses reduced axial elongation in myopic children by 0.28mm, on average, over a 2-year period.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that ortho-k lenses can be a safe and effective treatment option to manage myopia. Abiliti Overnight lenses are optimized by the use of corneal topography, refractive error and other measurements connected to an experiential fitting software, FitAbiliti.

The FitAbiliti software guides the eye care professional through the fitting process and recommends a lens with the first fit success rate of approximately 90%.

“The prevalence of myopia in children is increasing, and as optometrists we are on the front lines of this epidemic that may threaten the vision of future generations,” said Moshe Mendelson, OD, FIAO. “The FDA approval of Abiliti™ Overnight lenses will provide eye care professionals and parents with more options to manage myopia.”

Abiliti Overnight lenses will be available in two different contact lens designs: ACUVUE Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic Lenses for Myopia Management, and ACUVUE Abiliti Overnight Therapeutic Lenses for Myopia Management for Astigmatism.

How does it work?

Abiliti Overnight lenses are worn overnight to reduce refractive error up to 4.00 D (and up to 1.50D of astigmatism). These lenses temporarily reshape the cornea, and allow patients to see clearly the next day after being worn overnight. Each lens is specifically designed to fit the unique shape of each patient’s unique corneal shape and prescription.

Steepening of the peripheral cornea which accompanies central corneal flattening may reduce peripheral retinal hyperopia, thus slow down myopia progression.
