It is important to choose suitable frames for your child as not all frames are suitable for myopia control lenses such as Hoya MiYOSMART 豪雅新乐学 and Essilor Stellest (依視路星趣控) .
Wearing a frame that does not fit properly can reduce the effectiveness of the myopia control lenses. Usually the optometrists or opticians will advise you on the type and size of frame that is suitable for your child before purchase. When the frame is not selected properly, it might cause problems when your child is wearing the glasses.
Problems your child might encounter when wearing glasses
We often encounter new customers complaining that their child’s glasses keep sliding down the nose, especially when the child is active. Some also find that the glasses would not sit properly on the child’s nose. Some children might also complain that their nose hurts when wearing their glasses.
Even after visiting optical shops to adjust the frame, the same problems still occur. This mean the spectacle is not suitable for your child.
Why your child’s glasses keep falling off
This happens because the frame chosen is not suitable for your child. Instead of a kids frame, an adult frame was chosen. As a result, the frame is too big for your child. Even for kids frame, they come in different sizes.
If the frame is too big for your child, it will look oversized and heavy which can cause the glasses to slide down and deep indentation on the nose. The bigger the frame size, the thicker and heavier the lens will be. In addition, the temple might also be too long and we will need to bend the temple ends excessively behind the ear in order to keep the frame securely on the face.
Choosing a frame without nosepads can affect how well the glasses is sitting on the nose and the comfort. If your child does not have a high nose bridge and chose a frame (acetate frame for example) without nosepads, the frame will usually sits lower on the nose. They will then need to keep pushing up the frame to see clearer. Even if the frame can be tighten, it still not be sitting properly on the nose and might even cause discomfort or pain after prolonged usage.
How frames can affect myopia control lens
The effectiveness of the myopia control lenses such as MiYOSMART and Stellest can be reduced if the frame chosen is not suitable.
Myopia control spectacle lenses need to be fitted precisely to ensure that your child is looking through the correct part of the lens ( treatment zone) . If the glasses is not in place and keep sliding off the nose, your child may experience blur. If treatment zone is not in proper place, the effectiveness will also be reduced. Hence, it is important to choose a frame that is suitable for your child.

How to choose the right frame for your child?
At Evershine Optical, our optometrists will recommend suitable frames for your child. When choosing frame, we will usually take note of:
- Frame size
- Temple length
- Adjustable nosepad
- Anti slip temple tip
Frame Size
When choosing a frame, we will not recommend a frame that is too big as we have explained earlier. Some parents prefer to choose a bigger frame for their child because they thought their child can still use the frame when they grow up. However, it might not be suitable for the child at that point of time. For example, you would not choose a pair of shoes for your kid that is larger than what he / she needs just because they are going to outgrow them.
Temple Length
The temple length should be long enough to bend over the ear. If it is too short, there might not have enough grip over the ear and the glasses might be loose for your child. However, it should also not be too long. If not we will need to see if the temple can be cut shorter for the frame to be fitted properly on your child, otherwise the frame will be loose as well. We may need retainers or ear hook to keep the glasses in place.
Adjustable nosepad
It is recommended to have adjustable nosepads on the frame, especially if your child have a flat nose bridge. It prevent the frame from sitting too low on nose which allows the frame to be fitted properly on your child.
Soft rubber coated ends / Anti slip temple tips
This feature prevents the frame from slipping and allows the frame to be more secure especially when your child is active.
