Standard VS Customized Progressive Lenses

There are different types of progressive lenses, standard and customized progressive lenses. Do you know standard VS customized progressive lenses, which is better?

Standard Progressive Lenses

Standard progressive lenses are designed based on standard parameters. Example of standard progressive lenses are ZEISS Light D, ZEISS Light 3D, Hoya Dynamic Summit, Hoya Dynamic Premium and Essilor Liberty 3.0.

Customized Progressive Lenses

Each frame fits differently on every individual. Customized progressive lenses are progressive lenses designed just for you.

Under customized progressive lenses, there are progressive lenses ranging from least customized to most customized. As it gets more customized, more measurements will be taken into account to design the lenses.

Similarity between Standard and Customized Progressive Lenses

Both standard and customized progressive lenses are able to provide distance, intermediate and near vision. In addition, both will need to measure the centration of the eyes. This is a necessary measurement for any type of progressive lenses.

Difference between Standard and Customized Progressive Lenses

Measurements

As compared to standard progressive lenses, more measurements will be taken to design customized progressive lenses.

The following measurements are taken for most customized progressive lenses :

These measurements can be measured precisely using digital centration device like ZEISS i.Terminal 2 at Eversshine Optical and will be taken into account to design the lenses. This will lessen the peripheral distortions of the progressive lenses, hence providing a wider field of view.

Peripheral Distortions and Field of View

Even though both standard and customized progressive lenses provide distance, intermediate and near vision, the field of vision differs. As compared to standard progressive lenses, customized ones have lesser peripheral distortions and wider field of view.

Left image is an example of a standard progressive. Right image is an example of a customized progressive

The left image shows a narrower field of vision and more peripheral distortions as compared to the right image.

Especially for drivers, you will be able to benefit from the wider field of vision for customized progressive. With wider field of vision, there will be lesser head movement when you look towards the rear view mirror.

Adaptation

With lesser amount of peripheral distortions and wider field of view, there will be lesser amount of head movement when you want to have sharp vision. Your vision will also be more natural looking through the lenses.

Hence, with customized progressive, you will be able to adapt faster as compared to standard progressive.

Who will benefit from Customized Progressive?

First time progressive wearer

There is always an adaptation period for first time progressive wearers. First time wearers often need to get use to the head movement and distortions at the sides. With a personalized progressive, first time wearers will be able to adapt faster. With faster adaptation, they be able to enjoy the benefits that progressive glasses can bring for them.

Wearers with high prescription

High prescription refers to people with high myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and / or presbyopia.

High prescription will result in more peripheral distortions and a narrower field of view in the progressive lenses. Example, wearers with high myopia and prsebyopia will experience more distortions as compared to wearers with low myopia and presbyopia. With customized progressive, patients with high prescriptions are able to enjoy a wider field of vision.

Progressive wearers whose reading power increase

Usually when the power increase, wearers will experience more peripheral distortions. In most cases, it will be the presbyopia which increased.

The images below shows ZEISS Smartlife Progressive Individual with reading add from +1.00 to +3.00. Click to view bigger image.

From these images, we can tell that as the reading power increase, the peripheral distortions increases and the field of view gets narrower. Hence, wearers will require more head movement to see clearly.

For a person with a +3.00 reading add, they will benefit from a fully customized progressive like ZEISS Individual compared to Progressive PURE as the reading zone is widened through customization.

Wearers who do more near tasks

Corridor length is the distance between your distance power to your full reading power on the progressive.

The shorter the corridor length, the faster you will be able to look through the full reading power. Hence, for wearers who do more near tasks, such as using phone, a shorter corridor length will be more comfortable as there will be lesser eye movement.

Other than your vision activities, corridor length is also determined by frame size and the way you wear the spectacle.

The top image shows progressive lens with a longer corridor length. The bottom image shows progressive lens with shorter corridor length. Click to view bigger image.

From the images above, we can tell that when the corridor length is shorter, there will be more peripheral distortions and the field of view for distance and intermediate will be smaller.

Therefore, having a customized progressive will minimized the distortions and maximized the field of view as compared to standard progressive.

We have customers who finds it uncomfortable when they need to look towards the very bottom on the lens to see small prints on their phone. The reading area was uncomfortably low for them. Hence, we shorten the corridor door length, and they found it more comfortable to look at small print as there were lesser eye movements.

Previous standard progressive wearer

Progressive wearer who previously wore a standard design can also benefit from customized progressive. In addition, wearers who complain of narrow vision can also benefit from customized progressive.

If their prescription remains the same, they will realized that with customized progressive, they will not need to move their head as much compared to standard progressive.

Current customized progressive wearer

If you are a customized progressive wearer, are your progressive the most customized?

For customized progressive, there are least customized to most customized progressive. If your progressive is not the most customized, are you satisfied with the current pair?

The images shows ZEISS Smartlife Progressive Pure (Least customized) VS ZEISS Smartlife Progressive Individual (Most customized) with the same degree.

Usually when patient’s degree increase, we will recommend more customized progressive, so that customers can adapt faster.

Standard VS Customized Progressive

Standard VS Customized progressive lenses, which is better?

In short, both standard and customized progressive lenses allow you to see distance, intermediate and near. However, the field of view is narrower and there are more peripheral distortions for standard progressive.

On the other hand, customized progressive allows you to have progressive lenses designed just for you, giving you lesser peripheral distortions, wider field of view and faster adaptation.

To have a wider field of view, lesser peripheral distortions, lesser head movements and faster adaptation, customized progressive will be the best option for you.
