Officelens by Zeiss : Uncompromising performance for demanding vision

With the incidence of computer related vision problems increasing rapidly across the world, ZEISS comes up with ‘Officelens’ , a new series of customized, free form lenses that have been specifically designed or purpose-built for office work and computer use.

Officelens is an occupational progressive lens design that has been engineered with the intermediate and near zones distributed over the entire lens area in order to provide exceptionally large fields of clear, comfortable mid-range and reading vision. Yet, unlike ordinary occupational progressive lenses which are typically only available in two or three intermediate viewing distance configurations, often referred to as ‘degression’ powers, the maximum viewing distance of the intermediate zone of Officelens is specified by the eyecare professional. The maximum intended viewing distance of the lens is a critical parameter of occupational progressive lens designs, since it dictates the addition power in the upper zone of the lens.

Officelens by ZEISS is designed in real time for the individual wearer using Maximum Intermediate Distance Technology, which enables eyecare professionals to specify the maximum viewing distance of the intermediate zone of the lens. It is a new series of customized, free-form progressive lenses that are designed specifically for office work and computer use, eyecare professionals can now custom-tailor the perfect constant effort from the mechanisms of accommodation and convergence. Office work inevitably involves extensive computer use. Every year, millions of patients seek care to relieve computer-related vision problems. According to the US occupational safety and health administration, eyestrain is one of the most frequent complaints among computer users. Various studies have shown that up to 75 per cent or more of computer users may experience vision-related symptoms, including eyestrain, headaches, eye irritation, blur, and neck or back possibly associated with viewing-related postural adjustments.

Uncorrected vision problems or poorly designed eyewear that does not provide the proper optical correction can also result in symptoms such as blurred vision, eyestrain, temporary inability to focus on far-away objects, and headache also called the Computer Vision Syndrome.

Officelens by ZEISS is available in a variety of lens design configurations in order to allow eyecare professionals to select the most appropriate occupational lens design for each wearer. For the greatest flexibility, Officelens Individual allows eyecare professionals to specify any maximum intermediate distance from 100 to 400 centimeters. Alternatively, ECPs can choose among Officelens designs with a predefined maximum intermediate distance such as Officelens Plus Room and Officelens Superb Room for room length lens designs. Or the optical solution for presbyopes working in visually demanding environments.

Office work and similar near-oriented activities place significant demands upon the visual system. In particular, sustained vision at mid-range and up-close working distances requires other options are Officelens Plus Near and Officelens Superb Near. Moreover, Officelens by ZEISS is available in multiple progressive corridor lengths in order to maintain consistent reading utility, even in small frame sizes.

Difference between Officelens Book, Desk and Room

Every Officelens by ZEISS design is optically customized for the wearer’s unique prescription requirements using real-time optical design combined with patented free-form technology. By fine tuning the optical design of the lens for the exact prescription, residual optical aberrations are virtually eliminated, resulting in significantly wider fields of clear vision compared to similar traditional lenses.

Officelens Individual is the most premium occupational lens design by ZEISS. Although every OFFICELENS is customized for the wearer’s prescription, immediately prior to free-form fabrication, Officelens individual is fully customized for both the wearer’s prescription and position of wear in order to ensure that the intended optical performance of the lens design is preserved for each and every wearer. With Officelens Individual, wearers will therefore enjoy the widest viewing zones possible with the sharpest vision quality, regardless of their unique prescription or fitting requirements.

In order to evaluate wearer acceptance of Officelens Individual by ZEISS, an internal wearer trial was conducted by vision scientists at ZEISS. A total of 94 presbyopic subjects who worked in an office and spent at least five hours per day using a computer were evaluated. Wearers were overwhelmingly satisfied with the visual performance of Officelens in the key categories associated with office work and computer use.

carl_zeiss_lenses_officelensThe majority of those wearers who presented with symptoms of muscoskeletal discomfort, such as neck or shoulder pain, prior to using Officelens also reported a reduction in or cessation of symptoms. Furthermore, 97 per cent of wearers adapted to their new lenses within a few days, while 76 per cent adapted to their lenses within one day. The high rate of wearer acceptance and satisfaction confirmed the effectiveness of the lens design choices made for Officelens.

The usefulness of occupational progressive lenses is not limited only to presbyopes. Pre-Presbyopes who present with symptoms associated with computer use or reading as a result of accommodative dysfunction, such as accommodative insufficiency may also benefit from occupational progressive lenses with a low addition power. With a variety of customized lens design configurations to suit virtually any application, Officelens by ZEISS represents the perfect optical solution for any wearer engaged in visually demanding tasks in environments or situation that does not require far vision. (If officelens “Room” version is used, far vision will only be slightly blurred. This will be demonstrated to you during consultation)
