At Evershine Optical, we constantly seek to improve our diagnostic capability with the latest machine. We recently acquired the ZEISS IOLMaster 500, to better monitor your child’s myopia progression under our myopia management program.
What does ZEISS IOLMaster 500 do?
The ZEISS IOLMaster 500 measures the size of your eyeball called the axial length. It’s the gold standard when it comes to measurement of axial length and is used by the eye specialist for intra ocular lens implant calculations for cataract surgery. As optometrist, our primary use of this machine is to measure the eyeball length to monitor myopia progression.
Why measuring axial length is important to monitor myopia progression
When the eyeball grow longer (longer axial length), the myopia increase.
The best way to diagnose myopia is with refractive error, and the best way to monitor progression is to measure axial length.
To monitor myopia progression, sensitive measures are required. Axial length measurement is a quantitative method, more sensitive with optical biometers delivering reliable accuracy (0.04mm or 0.12D). On the other hand, subjective refraction is only +0.50D accurate.
We will be using ZEISS IOLMaster to measure your child’s axial length when he / she comes for eye examination and follow-up visits (for myopia control lenses and OrthoK) to monitor their myopia progression.
