In April 2021, Essilor newly launched a new product, Varilux Comfort Max. It is now available at Evershine Optical.
According to Essilor, the aim of Varilux® Comfort Max lens conception is to optimize the optical design. This is to provide the wearer with a wider useful vision zone. In addition, also a larger area for head movement enabling multiple and varied head postures, especially during prolonged tasks.

Technology Behind Varilux Comfort Max
Live Optics
Essilor have been using Live Optics since 1993 when Varilux Comfort was launched. Essilor R&D revamped Live Optics to investigate about postural flexibility for the first time.
Under the revamped LiveOptics process, there is a new advanced avatar stimulation. With the new avatar unique algorithm, it will consider wearers’ prescription, frame and focal point. It calculates postural flexibility while taking into account vision, gaze and postural effort.
Flex Optim Technology
15 vision profiles are developed after analyzing on the needs and preferences of 1225 Varilux lens wearers. Essilor’s design calculator will determine the optimal vision profile based on your prescription.
Subsequently, Flex Optim Technology will adjust the vision profile to each patient. It calculates patients’ lens progression profile. This ensures that Varilux Comfort Max are adjusted to each individual’s prescription for smooth focusing from near to far. Essilor mentioned that thanks to Flex Optim Technology, wearers are now able to have:
- Clear and wider vision at all distances
- Seamless vision from far to near
- Comfort in any tasks
- High resolution vision in any light
Essilor Varilux Comfort Max
A wearer test was conducted to find out the visual performances of Varilux Comfort Max. According to Essilor:
- 8/10 wearers experienced easier adaptation.
- 9/10 want to continue to wear Varilux Comfort Max.
- 83% prefer Varilux Comfort Max to their normal visual solution.
- Wearers confirmed that Varilux Comfort Max is a good all-round lenses. It provides balanced performances for all viewing distances.
Difference between Varilux Comfort Max and Varilux Comfort 3.0
Varilux Comfort Max is the most recent development in the evolution of Varilux Comfort 3.0 lens. The image below shows the useful vision zone at intermediate distance (60cm) for Varilux Comfort Max and Varilux Comfort 3.0:
Varilux Comfort Max has a larger intermediate vision as compared to Varilux Comfort 3.0.

For Varilux Comfort Max, the number of head postures possible is 495. On the other hand, the number of head postures for Varilux Comfort 3.0 is 268. This shows that Varilux Comfort Max is able to provide more postural flexibility than Varilux Comfort 3.0. As a result, it is able to provide a better balance of visual performance at all distance as compared to Varilux Comfort 3.0.
